According to the 2008 State of the Net summary 1 in 7 computer users had major virus problems.

Having a firewall is a necessity today. Supposedly more than 50% of the PC’s connected to the internet are either not or unsufficiently protected. Because there are so many unprotected PC’s many people become a victim of hackers. A very common scenario: If you do not have a firewall a hacker might abuse your PC to attack other people without you even knowing about it. To improve your system security and speed it helps to find out more about the processes that run on your PC. Unfortunately unknown processes can establish a connection through the internet to send personal data to a hacker and usually there are also a few processes that consume a lot of resources. Wouldn’t it be great to know the exact location of that process to investigate it?

If you have some folders you want to access quickly, because you regulary open or save files inside, then it helps a lot to add this folder to the file dialog. The file dialog has already a few folders on the left side, usually “Recent Places”, “Desktop”, “Computer”, “Network”. If you want to increase your productivity, then it is necessary to replace the folders with your most commonly used folders.

The last couple of days I had to deal with a few problems, that were mainly caused by some stupid mistakes. I turned off my computer holidng the power-on button for a few seconds (this will usually shutdown a PC completely), because I was in a hurry and had to leave. After I turned on the PC again a couple hours later I received a message that the file /system32/config/system was missing and this is a crucial file of the operating system…
