Customize Open/Save File Dialog, increase your productivity!

Share

If you have some folders you want to access quickly, because you regulary open or save files inside, then it helps a lot to add this folder to the file dialog. The file dialog has already a few folders on the left side, usually “Recent Places”, “Desktop”, “Computer”, “Network”. If you want to increase your productivity, then it is necessary to replace the folders with your most commonly used folders.

To customize this file dialog follow a few short steps:

1. Run “GPEDIT.msc”

Click on “Start” and then type “GPEDIT.msc” into the search field. Press Enter.

2. Locate the “Common File Dialog”

Click on the dark arrows:
# User Configuration
# Administrative Templates
# Windows Components
# Windows Explorer
# Common Open File Dialog

Click on the following picture to see detailed instructions:

Click on the folder “Common Open File Dialog”. On the right side double-click on the entry “Items displayed in Places bar” as seen above.

3. Now simply select “Enabled” and enter the path to your most used folders:

Click on “Apply” after you added the path correctly.

4. Enjoy!

Please stumble it if you liked it! Thanks :)

One caveat; It seems that Vista home does not contain GPEdit. I guess I’ll look around for a registry edit to customize the Common Folders”

    This might help you: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=41dc179b-3328-4350-ade1-c0d9289f09ef&DisplayLang=en

It lists all registry entries under the tab “All”. Once you search for “Common File Dialog” you’ll find this:

    WindowsExplorer.admx
Hide the common dialog back button
Hide the dropdown list of recent
Hide the common dialog places bar
    Items displayed in Places Bar

Maybe that will help you. Let me know if you have any problems

    Here’s the registry setting:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar!Place0, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar!Place1, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar!Place2, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar!Place3, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar!Place4

Great, been trying to do this for a while, and did it before for My Favorites but this was the trick! Thanks!

I’m coming from a Mac, where when you save a file to a folder, ALL the files in that folder are visible in the Save Dialog box. (This helps me to know I’m Saving it in the right place, because I will recognize the other files there.)

Is this possible in Windows 7? (I know that you CAN View All Files when you go to OPEN a file from inside an application.)

    Thanks!

    just a test nothing else
